I remember September 15, 1963. I was about to turn 8 years old. I could clearly imagine four young girls primping for church service after finishing up with Sunday School. That incident has reverberated within me every time a mass tragedy has occurred. The news media always describes these events as “unprecedented”. Not to me, not to any Black person who was alive on that day and saw a place as cherished and sacred as a church be destroyed and four children killed.
