These are the children born in spirit by women like myself who worked day after day for change, transformation and social justice but did not have children or families of our own. Less of a loss when I see their faces and hear their voices.

I do not claim these children as my tribe. I claim them as the sons and daughters of Audre Lorde, James Baldwin, August Wilson, Tupac Shakur, Thurgood Marshall, Ann Richards, Robert Kennedy, [keep filling in the blanks]. These children were born on the pulse of [Maya Angelou’s inaugural] morning.

I am not only in awe of what they are doing to a nation, I cannot wait to see what they will do to the world.
